How many of you’ve ever wanted to travel the world with your camera, well I have. It’s a dream of a large number of photographers and videographers out there. So, what makes some so successful in that particular job and others don’t. Here are some of my finding.
Commercial travel photography provides imagery for the $1 trillion global tourism industry. It includes photographing destination hotels and resorts, tourist attractions, scenery, outdoor adventures, local events, cultures, and customs. Images are used for advertising, merchandising, and print sales.
There are lots of travel photographers who inspire me a lot. I will talk about three of them specifically.
My favourite one among them is Sam Kolder. I came to know about him when I watched one of his ‘My Year’ videos on YouTube. It was a mind-blowing piece of art everything from the footage, transitions, sound design and colour grading. That video made me curious about the creator of the video. When I checked out his Instagram feed, I came to know that he is a fantastic photographer as well. A well-talented combination of photography, videography and editing skills made him so special and unique in the industry.
The second one is Julius Kähkönen. He started his carrier as a Digital artist who makes unique pictures making composites of different pictures. His editing is so perfect that we don’t even recognise it’s a composite of the pictures. He made use of his photoshop skills to make online courses and sell it to aspiring photographers and digital artists across the world.

The third one is Elliott Chau. He is a 23-year-old travel photographer from Canada. His photos on Instagram speaks for himself as a travel photographer. They are perfectly composed and well-edited with attention to detail. He writes blogs about his visits to places across the world. He also sells his custom-made presets through his blog and Instagram posts.

There are a lot of things that we learn from the above three. The most important one being they are very good at what they are doing. It took them lots of years of hard work and dedication to the craft they are doing. It’s just like the proverb “Practice makes perfect”. The second thing is we need to know how we can make money while travelling the world. It can be anything from taking online courses, prints, stock photos/videos, selling presets, collaborating with tourism agencies, concerts and hotel chains.
Personally, I am in a stage of learning the craft. I always try to push myself to learn from the successful people in the industry out there. Since it is equally important to learn how to edit photos and videos as to how we take them, I am learning how to make the best out of the software like photoshop and premiere pro. The third thing is ‘The more you know about the craft and things related to it, the better’ which mean learning about the things like social media marketing, blogging, vlogging and web designing add more value to you as an artist in the industry. Persistence and dedication are the key to success in this particular job as well as in any job in the world.
